AFT Maryland is a state federation affiliated with AFT representing approximately 19800 collective bargaining unit employees with over 13000 actual union members spread over the entire state of Maryland. Kindergarten through grade 12 teachers and paraprofessionals represent the largest portion of the union’s membership -- 8200 teachers and paraprofessionals in Baltimore, 100 teachers in the school for the deaf and 250 spread over three minority locals. The remainders are all public employees in six collective bargaining units which constitute 4 public employee units and 2 public employee healthcare locals. Leaders from each of the locals make up the executive board of AFT-MD.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 
  • Coordinates the field implementation of the Union’s programs to increase the capacity of locals to meet their members’ needs, including bargaining, crisis organizing, member rights, member organizing, education issues, legislative and political action, and member training.
  • Directs and evaluates the staff including:
    • Director of communications
    • 3 Organizing and service representatives
    • Lobbyist/ Professional Issue person
    • Office Manager
    • Part time clerical employee
  • Coordinate Staff Assignments
  • Assists locals with organizing projects in their units
  • Coordinates organizing other unorganized education and public sector employees
  • Assists in preparing budgets and advised on financial matters as requested
  • Coordinates financial operations and reporting
  • Provides advice and assistance to leaders as requested
  • Represents members in grievances as requested
  • Assists in the development of staff, leaders and member training programs
  • Oversee the development of the agenda and subsequent facilitation of state federation meetings and convention
  • Represents locals and provides assistance to local in collective bargaining as requested
  • Assists in developing and implementing the legislative agenda of the Union and its local affiliates
  • Provides for the political education of members
  • Maintains liaison with the local, state and national affiliates, other employee organizations and coalition partners
  • Manages the Unions investments and property and makes recommendations as needed
     
  • Supervises public relations and communications for the state federation
     
 
Qualifications: Minimum Bachelor’s degree, valid drivers’ license, excellent communications and writing skills, familiarity with union work as a leaders or staff member is required. Experience in organizing new groups of employees. Management experience with locals that include teachers, educational support professionals, public employees and/or healthcare personnel is a plus.
 
Compensation and Benefits: Salary negotiable depending on experience and qualifications. Individual and family medical insurance along with dental, life, long term disability insurance, pension plan benefits, vacation, sick and personal leaves and paid holidays.
