Collective Bargaining Representation
Take Action, Get Involved! In order to strengthen the power of our demands at the bargaining table, we need your ideas and participation. Please take the time to join MPEC, fill out the bargaining survey and get involved in your union. With your participation and with the participation of greater numbers of state professionals, we are building a strong and aggressive voice on the critical issues facing us at the workplace. As the laws on collective bargaining rights improve, we can take advantage of our rights to demand contract improvements and better working conditions. Yes, these are tough times and the attacks on public employees grow day by day. By joining together we can address these threats and work for improvements in the months and years ahead.
Maryland state professional employees are represented at the bargaining table by the Maryland Professional Employees Council (MPEC). Through surveys and worksite meetings across the state, your MPEC bargaining team take issues of concern into negotiations with the administration. The resulting agreements on these issues are adopted into a contract that is binding on both the union and the administration and is enforced through the contract’s grievance procedure. In the past several years, wages for MPEC represented employees have increased over 35 percent. Among other things, MPEC has also negotiated to maintain adequate healthcare insurance and secured language for labor management committees at the agency levels. Union Contract Negotiations This fall we are going back to the bargaining table to negotiate a new contract. Please fill out the survey on this Website so your bargaining team knows what you want brought to the table. The current contract is also posted on this site. If you haven't read it yet, you may not know what your rights are. Your bargaining team will fight to protect jobs, benefits and retirement, but they also need to know what is going on where you work. If we are successful in reaching a tentative agreement with the State, the contract or MOU must be approved by a majority of those voting in favor of contract ratification. Maryland law provides that both union members and non-members have the right to vote on contract ratification. A contract can not become effective until such a vote. Get involved! |
