The warm weather of the summer season provides a great opportunity for AFT-Maryland to get involved in the community. President Kenya Campbell and the state federation team set up a table for voter registration, joining a large number of vendors and merchants for the Black Wall Street of Baltimore Business Walk. The event was sponsored by the non-profit Notre Maison Connects, an organization founded and led by Jacqueline Cummings, a member of the Baltimore Teachers Union.
This year’s voter registration efforts go beyond the traditional voter engagement efforts in the past, due to the upcoming statewide elections, redistricting, and the unique election taking place in Baltimore for the school board race. For the first time, citizens will have an opportunity to elect two members of the community to the school board. AFT-Maryland continues to engage in voter education as a companion to voter registration efforts. While at this event, the state federation educated the public on upcoming ballot issues in addition to the new school board positions Baltimoreans will elect.
The event also provided an opportunity for our leadership and staff to introduce themselves to members of the community, as some who stopped by the table were unfamiliar with the organization. The high visibility and public engagement offered an opportunity for people in Baltimore to learn about the workers who provide them with public services. Members of our affiliated unions, including the City Union of Baltimore (Local 800), Maryland Professional Employees Council (Local 6197), and the Baltimore Teachers Union (Local 340), stopped by the AFT-Maryland table to meet the community, as well.
