Back to School Night Community Event at Eutaw Marshburn

Back to School Night is a great opportunity for a school and community to interact. Schools often have resources beyond educating students that parents and children alike can benefit from. Back to School Night at Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary exemplified that mutual relationship between the school and the community. AFT-Maryland participated in this event to provide additional resources to members who work at the school and the community in attendance.

Community Engagement Director Jeffery Johnson worked the AFT-Maryland table passing out hand sanitizer, masks, child identification kits, and registering community members to vote. He also shared vital union-related information with members who work in the school. Members learned about AFT member benefits and public service loan forgiveness opportunities as well. There were even those who worked for Baltimore City Public Schools who were curious about opportunities for loan forgiveness and to learn about their place in the union.

In addition to AFT-Maryland, the evening featured fun and games for the entire family. There was a bounce house in the gym where students tumbled while parents and guardians talked with educators. The school also had a DJ and a number of other fun activities including face painting and balloon animals.
