Statement from AFT-Maryland President Marietta English on the Great Mills High School Shooting

“It is heartbreaking to once again hear of a school shooting, this time here in Maryland at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County. The entire federation’s main concern is for the safety and welfare of the students and staff of Great Mills. Beyond the steps that our state legislature has taken to reduce the number of weapons on our streets, our country has to begin to do the hard work of changing the culture of violence that permeates across our land. Gun violence in our schools, our towns, our cities, and everywhere is too great a problem. We must arm our nation with conflict resolution skills that does not resort to gun violence.

We offer all of our love and support to our partners at the Education Association of St. Mary’s and the students and families they serve. AFT-Maryland will also continue the work that we and so many of our community partners have done to reduce gun violence in our state and hope to never hear of bullets flying on a school campus again.”
