Statement on May Day from President English

On this day, AFT-Maryland reflects on the many contributions organized labor has made in this nation and across the world. We remember the sacrifices made by so many women and men to ensure workers have fair wages and decent working conditions.

We also remember the numerous unnamed women workers and workers of color who had to fight for dignity and respect within the labor movement. They helped make labor a more vibrant and dynamic force that could truly be reflective of the best this country has to offer.

Any thought of labor would be incomplete without acknowledging the current attacks on organized labor. Right-to-Work laws and the pending Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 Supreme Court Case shows that powerful corporate interest will stop at nothing to silence the worker and threaten the collective will of working people. Working people know that despite these attacks, when we organize and work in solidarity, our collective strength strikes a mighty blow for righteousness. Happy May Day.
