Members go to Annapolis for Lobby Night 2020

Members from the affiliated locals of AFT-Maryland made their way to Annapolis to lobby elected officials on public employee issues that are coming up in the 2020 Maryland legislative session. Lobby night is an annual event that allows the state federation to put members before legislators to make their voices heard. For state employees this is an opportunity to talk with those who make legislation that directly impacts their work life.

The night is a combination of planned meetings and drop-ins. Members are divided into groups and some groups speak to state Senators while others talk with state Delegates. Often, members who are in groups with planned meetings will get a chance to meet their own elected official as a constituent. Others will meet with legislators who may sit on a committee that will directly handle an issue at their worksite.

Legislators look forward to engaging AFT-Maryland members and expect the lobby night annually. Others who are unfamiliar with the state federation and the affiliated locals use the night as an opportunity to learn how the state legislation affects public employees at the state and local level who work across a number of professional sectors including but not limited to civil service, health care, and education.
