AFT Maryland Members and Leaders Engage State Elected Officials

AFT Maryland Legislative Reception 2024

State senators and delegates in Annapolis know the name of AFT Maryland. Our legislative efforts are an important part of the role we play for members. A number of key decisions impacting members’ work experiences are decided during the 90-day legislative session, and AFT Maryland actively supports, monitors, or opposes legislation impacting members. One thing that members and local leaders do not often have the chance to do is meet with legislators directly. The AFT Maryland Legislative Reception gives members a chance to talk face-to-face with elected officials.

This year’s event was once again held at the Governor Calvert House in Annapolis and there was representation from every AFT Maryland local. Leaders and members talked with legislators about bills dictating their workplace, budget issues, and policy decisions. Newly appointed elected officials attended and had the opportunity to learn how broad and diverse the membership of AFT Maryland is. One such official, Del. Malcolm Ruff (D-41) commented “I had a great time meeting with the various local leaders and members of AFT Maryland. I am very familiar with the union’s work on K-12 and higher education, but I’m glad I got a chance to meet leaders representing state and local employees and public health professionals. The reception was informative and for me solidified an already great working relationship.”

AFT Maryland president Kenya Campbell knows a lot of work goes into putting the legislative reception together, but the rewards are worth it. “Our members know we advocate for them in Annapolis during the legislative session, but there is nothing like talking to an elected official for yourself. For many of the electeds, they appreciate hearing directly from members who work with Marylanders and serve their constituents,” President Campbell said. She went on to note, “The discussions are really productive because, unlike testifying before a committee, the relaxed environment makes even disagreements productive because the conversations are cordial and there is a mutual commitment to identifying the best solution for residents. State officials know the desired intentions behind policy, but members know what the real-life implications are when policies are put into practice.”

Members who attended received invitations from their local leaders. Each union leader decided which members to invite to the reception to advocate for their union’s priorities.
