Supreme Court: Janus v. AFSCME 31

It is disappointing that the Supreme Court has granted certiorari in Janus v. AFSCME Council 31. Labor unions have been the engine that have driven the economic motor of the middle class in the United States during the majority of the 20th century. It is no coincidence that as labor union participation has decreased in the nation over the last few decades, the wages of workers have remained stagnant while the richest Americans continue to get richer.  This latest attempt to undermine public sector employees is another example of corporate greed attacking working people in an attempt to rig the rules of the economy in their favor.

Our state federation proudly represents over 18 thousand public sector employees across the state of Maryland. We work hard for fair compensation and labor conditions, and believe in the power of collective bargaining to obtain these things for the welfare of our members and the citizens of Maryland whom they serve. This attempt to undermine public sector employees is nothing more than an assault on the decency of the labor of our members. We stand united and in solidarity with other labor unions across the state and nation that represent public sector employees. We will work with our national federation to ensure that members’ voices are heard and trust that when the facts of the case are laid out, the Court will recognize this corporatist attack on working people for what it is, and reject it.
