Candidate Questionnaire Responses 2020

The AFT-Maryland prepared a questionnaire for candidates running for office in Baltimore City as a means to familiarize the candidates with issues that our members care about most. It also allows us the chance to see where the candidates stand on these issues.

Mayoral Candidate Forum

AFT-Maryland will be holding a Mayoral Candidate Forum for members of our locals. Join with fellow members of AFT-Maryland for a Mayoral Candidate Forum. Hear from the various candidates for Baltimore City Mayor as they share their visions for the future of the City. Be there to ensure the candidates know our members’ priorities. Help us decide who to support for the AFL-CIO Endorsement.

AFT Votes

Whether at the bargaining table or the ballot box, the American Federation of Teachers provides a vehicle for working people and our communities to build collective power and accomplish what cannot be achieved alone. The more involved our members are, the stronger our collective voice is and the more effective our political role becomes.

With the 2020 presidential election underway, our members’ voices need to be heard. That is why the AFT executive council approved a presidential endorsement process that aspires to include the greatest level of participation of AFT members ever. Together, we can ensure that our collective voice shapes the debate and that we elect a candidate who shares our values and vision for our country.

AFT-Maryland 2019 Legislative Report

Despite the overwhelming competition to get bills passed all the way through to the governor, AFT-Maryland and its affiliate unions did well in the 2019 legislative session. Bills passed, compromises were made, raises were put in the budget and the first implementation of the Kirwan Commission’s recommendations are now law.

The AFT-Maryland Endorsement Process

  • The AFT-Maryland, and each of its affiliated locals, are dues-paying members of the AFL-CIO. Fifty-five labor unions nationwide, including AFT, AFSCME, UAW, the Electrical Workers Union, the Firefighters Union, and scores of others, form the AFL-CIO, representing 12.5 million working people nationwide. The AFT-Maryland participates in and follows the AFL-CIO endorsement process.

Who are my elected state and local leaders?

Most of our members know who their elected representatives are working for them in DC. But do you know who represents you in Annapolis? Or in city hall? Or in county government? In many cases, elected leaders at the state and local levels make decisions on policy issues that most directly impact us as public employees and residents of those districts.

Your representatives need to hear from you on issues that directly concern you as a public employee and resident. Use the links below to find who represents you and how you may be able to reach out to them

Contribute to AFT-Maryland COPE

What is AFT-Maryland COPE?

AFT-Maryland COPE (Committee On Political Education) is a fund composed exclusively of voluntary contributions from union members that is used to help support pro-union candidates for elected office. Members must assert that they allow this contribution to be used so that the union may assist candidates who share our values and concerns in running for elected office.

COPE funding is separate from member dues. No dues dollars are contributed to political candidates.
