On December 6th, the Maryland State Legislature will convene a special session to redraw our state’s congressional boundaries based on the 2020 U.S. Census data. They will also consider overriding the vetoes on a number of important bills, as well as elect a new State Treasurer. The State Treasurer sits on the state employee and teacher pension board, and represents one vote on the three-member Board of Public Works, which deliberates on state procurement and budgetary items when the legislature is not in session.
They include:
- The freedom for employees to have a voice on the job. SB 717/HB 904
This bill would require new state employees the right to meet with their union representatives.
- A bill to protect the workers at our community colleges. SB 746/HB 894
This bill grants workers at Maryland’s Community Colleges the same right to collectively bargain as other public employees in the state.
