AFT Maryland delegates and leaders took to Houston, Texas to join with thousands of other AFT members for the national union’s biennial convention. AFT Maryland was prominently featured in signage as well as on the convention floor. The state federation turned heads throughout the nation with our organizing of public employees from the Maryland School for the Deaf, various community college faculty, and residents and fellows at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Many members of the state federation participated in the Convention in a myriad of ways. Secretary-Treasurer LaBrina Hopkins chaired the Human Rights Committee during general business. President Kenya Campbell was featured in a segment called “Voices from the Floor.” This segment highlighted the organizing work that AFT has done all across the country. President Campbell spoke to some of the aforementioned organizing gains made by the state federation since the national convention two years ago in Boston. The Baltimore Teachers Union Local 340 was instrumental in getting a resolution passed from the floor that cemented the AFT’s commitment to solidarity with the broader labor movement.
Joining the BTU at the convention were Maryland state federation members representing the Maryland Classified Employees Association Local 1935, Baltimore County Federation of Public Employees Local 4883, AFT Healthcare-Maryland Local 5197, Baltimore County Federation of Public Health Nurses Local 5102, Maryland Professional Employees Council Local 6197, and our newest collective bargaining unit making their first trip to the convention as union members, Maryland School for the Deaf Faculty and Staff Association Local 4828.
