AFT-MD at the Sickle Cell Disease Walk

In keeping with annual tradition the AFT-Maryland joined other community groups and volunteers for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America’s annual “Walk With the Stars” event in August. The state federation manned a table that provided books, voter registration, child identification kits, and a host of other important items. Jerry Smith, president of Maryland Professional Employees Council, AFTMD Local 6197, was in attendance, as were members and staff of MPEC and AFT-Maryland.

After completing the walk at the beautiful Canton Waterfront Park near the Korean War Memorial, attendees were entertained by a troupe of young steppers as well as a DJ, and inflatable basketball and football games. In the back-to-school rush, when the emcee announced AFT-Maryland’s presence with books and school supplies, attendees rushed to the table to get their share. Staff and members greeted them with smiles and a helping hand.

Voter registration is constantly important to the state federation and is promoted at every event. AFT-Maryland political coordinator Todd Reynolds was at the walk and made sure to inform all those who came past the table about upcoming local and state elections. They were also able to ask about age and residency requirements and registered some young soon to be first time voters.
