Thomas V. “Mike” Miller has led the upper chamber of the General Assembly for many years and his invaluable leadership has allowed the state to prioritize public employees and their families. His leadership on key educational and labor issues will be remembered by generations to come. AFT-Maryland wishes Sen. Miller a full and speedy recovery. His tireless efforts to preside over such an important body as he battled his illness showed the commitment to the people of Maryland that makes him one of our state's most important political figures ever.
AFT-Maryland congratulates Sen. Bill Ferguson, the new Senate President. We know his commitment to education and providing our state's children with the resources they'll need to be successful in the 21st century. This is particularly crucial as the General Assembly prepares to receive the Kirwan Commission recommendations and make decisions on the future of public education in Maryland. We've worked with Sen. Ferguson before on a number of issues and look forward to continuing a working relationship that'll prioritize state nurses, municipal and state workers, as well as education professionals across the state of Maryland.
