January Political Committee Meeting

With each passing month, we get closer to the most important election of our lifetime, the 2020 Presidential Election. In January, things get more complicated for the state federation with the start of the Maryland General Assembly Legislative Session. Despite all that’s going on, AFT-Maryland Political Coordinator Todd Reynolds convened the monthly political committee meeting. The diverse membership of the state federation was well represented with attendance from BTU, MPEC, AFT Healthcare-Maryland, and CUB.

The major focus of the meeting was the upcoming Congressional Special Election for the seat vacated by the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings. The Special Primary Election will take place on Tuesday, February 4th. This precedes the otherwise regularly scheduled Maryland primary which is scheduled for Tuesday April 28th. Coincidentally, the 28th is also the date of the Special General Election.

In addition to the the Special General election, Maryland will also hold primary elections on that day. This will mean important local races in Baltimore city such as mayor, city council president, comptroller, and council seats as well as the Presidential Primary will all be on the ballot. The committee discussed the best way to get member feedback on who locals and the state federation should endorse. The committee also explored ways to get members face time with candidates so they can be informed on where candidates stand on issues important to our members.
