In a show of solidarity, AFT-Maryland members and staff stood side by side with AFSCME members as they called on Governor Hogan and the MD General Assembly not to cut state employees' salaries. The event was well attended as a sea of green and blue shirts, hats, and signs covered Lawyers' Mall in Annapolis.
A number of high-profile legislators and labor leaders made speeches appealing to the state workers. Delegate Maggie McIntosh and State Senator Edward Kasemeyer spoke to the crowd about what they and their colleagues are doing to fight for state workers' pay.
In a show of unity, MSEA president Betty Weller and AFT-Maryland President Marietta English delivered impassioned remarks about how the fight for strong education funding and honoring a commitment to pay our state employees go hand in hand.
The crowd left the gathering fired up and excited to move forward with the hope that the general assembly will find a "better budget for Maryland."
