AFT-Maryland President Marietta English released the following statement after a Missouri grand jury failed to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the killing of Michael Brown:
"It saddens me that the grand jury decided not to indict Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. I urge all who protest to engage in civil disobedience with respect for others' lives and property.
I also stand with AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and reaffirm AFT-Maryland's commitment to supporting organizing efforts that lead to unity, healing, and fairness as well as improved relations between law enforcement and communities of color. We all share the same goals of wanting all of our children to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment regardless of race, color, creed, or religion.
Through this all, I ask we do not lose sight that a family has lost their son, nephew, and brother."
