Approaching the midterms elections, it may feel like our country is more divided than it has ever been. However, as union members working side-by-side with people from diverse backgrounds, we know that acknowledging and celebrating our differences doesn’t denigrate any of us. As a union of professionals, we also know how important accurate history is to the growth and development of a well functioning democracy and society.  That is why AFT-Maryland is taking a moment to acknowledge Indigenous People’s Day... It is important for each of us to have moments to reflect, atone, and begin anew with a commitment to being a better person for ourselves, our families, our communities, and colleagues. In that spirit we can appreciate the ten days of awe, the period of introspection and repentance following Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Back to School Night is a great opportunity for a school and community to interact. Schools often have resources beyond educating students that parents and children alike can benefit from. Back to School Night at Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary exemplified that mutual relationship between the school and the community. We are deeply saddened by the horrific event causing Baltimore to lose another promising young man to senseless gun violence.  Returning to school, even after a long weekend, can be a difficult reminder of the very real and present dangers our young people face on a daily basis. We echo the calls of President Diamonté Brown of the Baltimore Teachers Union when she says... Click to read MORE
labor-day-sq.jpg
Happy Labor Day weekend, members! For workers, this day is among the most sacred in our country. It is the only federal holiday on the calendar set aside to acknowledge labor. Today, the labor movement is under a vicious attack. The Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 decision sought to undermine the public employee labor movement while our siblings in the private sector labor movement are constantly fighting against wage theft, non-payment, and insufficient wages for an honest day’s work. Our strength is in our solidarity. Workers across the country are under attack, but there is hope. We are fighting back. Click to read MORE
