Leap year provided an extra day for Black History Month this year and AFT Maryland took advantage of it. Partnering with the Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys (BCSB), AFT Maryland once again celebrated Reading Opens the World Initiative with a Baltimore city school. The event featured remarks from principal Mr. Kelvin Bridgers who thanked AFT Maryland for facilitating the event and thanked Mr. Rogie Legaspi for attending the AFT Convention in Boston, Massachusetts where AFT kicked off the Reading Opens the World Initiative. AFT Maryland President Kenya Campbell passed out books and spoke to the students about which books interested them and what their reading habits were. Many of the young men at the all-boys school were eager to get their books and learn more about the titles offered. President Campbell enjoyed her time laughing and learning with the young men saying “the students at Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys were so energetic and full of life. They were playful and curious, but very serious about learning. So many of them gave their books thorough inspections before choosing them and I was glad to see that. That told me that they weren’t just taking the books because we were handing them out, they were choosing books that they were interested in and were going to read.”
AFT Maryland Secretary-Treasurer LaBrina Hopkins made a deal with the young men in attendance. If they read their chosen books and sent her an email detailing what they liked and did not like about the book and whether or not they would recommend the book to others, she would arrange a special surprise for them. Students have until the completion of spring break (April 2, 2024) to email Hopkins to qualify for the surprise.
