AFT Maryland President Meets with New Baltimore City Schools CEO

Kenya Campbell meets with CEO of Schools Dr Jermaine Dawson

Kenya Campbell, President of AFT Maryland, recently met with Dr. Jermaine Dawson, the new CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, during a BCPSS Listening Tour. President Campbell emphasized a simple but essential priority for the union: supporting the workers who show up for Baltimore's students every day and ensuring every child has what they need to succeed.

Dr. Dawson assumed the CEO role on July 1, 2026, succeeding Dr. Sonja Santelises. He comes to Baltimore after serving as Deputy Superintendent of Academic Services for the School District of Philadelphia.

During the meeting, Campbell underscored that strong schools depend on the educators, support professionals, and staff who make learning possible. When those workers are valued and supported, students benefit.

As Dr. Dawson settles into his role, the union looks forward to working together on shared goals: improving working conditions, strengthening classrooms, and expanding opportunities for students across Baltimore.

AFT Maryland is eager to partner with Baltimore City Public Schools in supporting the workers and students who make the district's mission a reality.
