BCCC Faculty Rally with Union Leaders, Students, Allies to Demand Fair Contract

BCCC Rally for a Fair Contract

On Tuesday, September 9th, dozens of faculty at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) – who unionized with United Academics of Maryland (UAMD), an affiliate of AFT Maryland, nearly one year ago – joined students, union leaders, electeds, and community groups at a rally to demand the fair contract faculty deserve after months of bargaining.

While BCCC’s president rakes in over half a million dollars a year, BCCC faculty are regularly experiencing delayed or inaccurate payroll as they face chronic understaffing on campus. Without being able to rely on a timely paycheck and having already taken on additional courses, faculty are now being pushed to teach even more extra classes due to understaffing.

As negotiations continue, faculty were joined at Tuesday’s rally by leaders, including AFT Maryland President Kenya Campbell, Baltimore AFL-CIO President Courtney Jenkins, UAMD President Angelique Cook-Hayes, and BCCC Union Chair Laura Pope, to make it clear to management that they are united in their fight with the support of the community.

BCCC is the only community college in Baltimore City and plays a critical role in the city’s workforce development while serving a predominantly Black, working-class, and immigrant student population. As BCCC faculty fight for their fair contract, they are fighting for the provisions and workplace improvements to ensure students have the high-quality education they deserve.
