Baltimore, MD—Baltimore Teachers Union President Marietta English offered these remarks on Family League of Baltimore being one of two multi-site recipients of the National Community Schools Award of Excellence:
I am so pleased that our partners at the Baltimore Education Roundtable are being acknowledged for their work. Family League of Baltimore has been a diligent partner in ensuring that Baltimore city students and ultimately their communities get all the resources they need to grow up and be successful citizens. We are extremely encouraged to see that community schools are being recognized for the wonders they are doing for the people they serve.
The three schools in Baltimore that the Family League are a part of (Ben Franklin High School, Wolfe Street Academy & Historic Samuel Coleridge Taylor Elementary School) are all making important strides in educating students and anchoring the communities they are in, providing needed wrap-around services to students, their families, and the larger community.
We are proud to partner with them as well as all of our partners on the Baltimore Education Roundtable. We sincerely hope this award will show government officials in Baltimore city and the state of Maryland the power of community schools and how they are a necessary and important investment.
