This year has tested us all. The hostile takeover by the new administration has left many uncertain about the future of our schools, our jobs, and the communities we serve. Memorial Day offers us a pause, a chance to take a breath, reflect, and reset. It’s a reminder that even in trying times, the seasons shift, the days grow longer, warmer, and we are still here, standing strong together.
Beyond the cookouts and family gatherings, Memorial Day asks something deeper of us – to honor the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to something greater than themselves. As public employees, we know what it means to fight and serve for our communities. And so we hold a special reverence for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in that same spirit.
From the first Memorial Day in 1865, when loved ones and strangers alike gathered to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War, our country has paused to remember those who died in service. In honor of their memory, we must remain committed to the ideals they gave their lives for – dignity, equity, and the collective welfare of all. Our state federation works to ensure all Maryland public employees receive the quality of life that honors those ideals.
We carry forward the legacy of service and sacrifice, not just in remembrance, but in our collective action. This Memorial Day, and every day, we honor our members who have served in the military and thank each of you for your bravery and service. Likewise, we honor our members who, every day, work for the benefit of the public and our communities.
Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day,
Kenya Campbell
