Statement from
AFT-Maryland President Marietta English
on the Flooding in Texas
AFT-Maryland is heartbroken at the news of the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey to those in southern Texas. The images of people wading in water chest high in their homes is absolutely devastating. We hope that our federal government, in coordination with state and local officials in Texas, can work quickly and safely to evacuate citizens who remain in the most dangerous areas. We also stand with our national union, ready to help members and non-members in Texas in whatever way is asked of us. We can start by contributing to the AFT Disaster Relief Fund. https://www.aft.org/disaster-relief-fund
While the flood has created undoubted tragedy, the outpouring of kindness reminds us of the best of the American spirit. This is particularly helpful to see as the nation has shown vitriolic and violent divisions as of late. The commitment to community present in Texas in the wake of Harvey is what makes America great. We hope Texans serve as a model to all Americans on how to love and engage our fellow neighbor. With such a commitment to caring we know the American spirit and the people of Texas will overcome this terrible tragedy.
