After months of bargaining, faculty at Prince George's Community College have secured a tentative agreement that addresses critical issues while providing increased salaries and improved working conditions.

“Our members were pushed to the breaking point by decisions made without transparency, without collaboration, and without respect. Faculty were treated as if their voices didn’t matter. But we organized, we built power, and we made sure management heard us loud and clear,” said UAMD President Angelique Cook-Hayes. “This agreement is the direct result of faculty refusing to accept unilateral changes and standing shoulder to shoulder to demand fairness. When we fight together, we win.”

Maryland’s 911 Specialists should have the same access to the state retirement benefits available to other public safety personnel (first responders), such as police, firefighters, and EMS workers. Unfortunately, the Internal Revenue (IRS) Code that governs qualified government pension plans will not allow it. 

The Maryland 911 Specialist Recruitment and Retention Workgroup has appealed to Congressional leaders, the Congressional NextGen 911 Caucus and Maryland’s federal delegation, to request support to amend the code.

AFT Maryland members and staff joined with an annual Community Trunk or Treat event for kids and families on Saturday, Oct. 25th, 2025 in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore. We were there with snacks and free books for the kids, and voter registration information for the grown-ups. It was a great afternoon for everyone.

AFT Maryland joined other sponsors of the event, including the A Philip Randolph Institute, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, Baltimore Metro Council AFL-CIO, several other unions, Hope Chapel Baptist Church, and the Rogue Auto Family.

In the upcoming 2026 Maryland State legislative session, Senators Jack Bailey and Will Smith plan to reintroduce Senate Bill 690, legislation to amend Maryland’s Police Officers and Probation Agents Scholarship Program - to include correctional officers.

After over a year of bargaining, faculty have secured a tentative agreement addressing the critical issues that drove organizing over a year and a half ago.

BALTIMORE, MD — Following the federal government shutting down overnight, AFT Maryland condemns the reckless actions of President Trump and Congressional Republicans that brought us to this point, a deliberate choice to prioritize tax breaks for the wealthy over the health and well-being of working families.

On Tuesday, September 9th, dozens of faculty at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) – who unionized with United Academics of Maryland (UAMD), an affiliate of AFT Maryland, nearly one year ago – joined students, union leaders, electeds, and community groups at a rally to demand the fair contract faculty deserve after months of bargaining.

While BCCC’s president rakes in over half a million dollars a year, BCCC faculty are regularly experiencing delayed or inaccurate payroll as they face chronic understaffing on campus. ...
