Dozens of BCCC Faculty & Staff Rally w/ Union Leaders to Demand Fair Contracts, Improved Benefits & Wages
AFT Maryland and AFSCME locals representing BCCC faculty and staff join forces to demand fair compensation and improved working conditions
BALTIMORE – On Wednesday, April 29, dozens of faculty at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) – who are unionized with United Academics of Maryland (UAMD), an affiliate of AFT Maryland – will join forces with AFSCME Local 1870, which represents employees at BCCC, to rally and demand the fair contract faculty and staff deserve.
While BCCC leadership delays negotiations and uses unlawful tactics to undermine the unions, AFT Maryland and AFSCME workers and leaders will demand college administration bargain in good faith, delivering contracts with fair compensation and fair working conditions. Both unions are sending a clear message to BCCC leadership: it is unacceptable that leadership fails to address the long-standing issues burdening faculty, staff, and students, and leadership must fulfill its duty to act in the best interest of students, faculty, and the city BCCC serves.
Faculty and staff will be joined at Wednesday's rally by UAMD-BCCC AFT-AAUP Chapter Chair Laura Pope, AFSCME Local 1870 President Nena Kutniewski, students, and union allies to make it clear to the administration that they are united in their fight with the support of the community.
BCCC is the only community college in Baltimore City and plays a critical role in the city's workforce development and in serving Black, working-class, and immigrant student population. When students come to BCCC, they expect and receive high-quality education that sets them up for success – and as faculty and staff rally for fair contracts, they are fighting for the conditions that ensure those expectations remain a reality.
