The verdict convicting Derek Chauvin was a glimmer of hope reminding us that when law enforcement officers go beyond the scope of their duty and kill citizens, they will be held accountable for their actions. It remains impossible for me to believe that anyone could have looked at the video where Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck and return a not-guilty verdict. However, history of police violence in the United States tells us the possibility of Chauvin being acquitted was a real one. That's why so many watched with anticipation, anxiety and bated breath as the verdict was announced. ...

The murder of eight people, six of them Asian women, in Georgia on Tuesday night dramatized the increasing violence and agression against our fellow AAPI residents. AFT-Maryland denounces this deplorable violence and demands that we as a country commit to eradicating racist violence once and for all.

There’s an annual effort to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with an act of community service. The ongoing global pandemic made in-person service activities nearly impossible, but three Maryland unions representing public employees came together for a way to honor Dr. King with a worthwhile effort. AFT-Maryland in conjunction with AFSCME Local 3 and SEIU 1199 held a joint legislative activist training. The event was designed to equip union members with the skills to engage state legislators and advocate for their needs in the workplace.
