AFT-Maryland Back-to-School Tour 2022

AFT-Maryland, in conjunction with the Baltimore City Council's President's Office toured several schools to kick off the first day of school. Leaders visited several schools and engaged with members and students, welcoming them to the new school year.

Happy Labor Day weekend, members! For workers, this day is among the most sacred in our country. It is the only federal holiday on the calendar set aside to acknowledge labor. Today, the labor movement is under a vicious attack. The Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 decision sought to undermine the public employee labor movement while our siblings in the private sector labor movement are constantly fighting against wage theft, non-payment, and insufficient wages for an honest day’s work. Children in Baltimore city may not be excited about going back to school, but they were excited for a fun filled day in East Baltimore. The Baltimore City Council President’s Office hosted a back to school event that brought hundreds of families out to Eager Park in East Baltimore. The event was supported by a number of business and non-profit partners showing what public-private partnerships in Baltimore can produce. The rising cost of inflation hits all of us. To fight that, AFT-Maryland partnered with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Rho Xi Omega Chapter for a community event. The state federation handed out books and backpacks after the students experienced an exciting day of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education.  Click for video & MORE

AFT-Maryland members and staff spent the first half of the summer engaging fellow union members on the 2022 Maryland primary election. Labor endorsed a number of candidates for state and local offices. AFT-Maryland members volunteered their time and efforts leading up to election day to canvass fellow union members to inform them about the particulars of this year’s off-schedule primary and the new laws about voting in Maryland.  Members phone banked and participated in labor walks, supporting Get Out the Vote efforts (GOTV) for the union-endorsed candidates in collaboration with the Maryland and DC AFL-CIO.
